Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 4/3/15

There was a break in the rain this afternoon, so I went for a hike here in Stoney Creek. I saw some of the usual woodland birds, and Pine Warblers were singing in the small pine forest at the end of my street.

As I approached Lake Monocan, I heard more Pine Warblers and a Belted Kingfisher. There was a Pied-billed Grebe in the lake - a fairly common visitor. But then I saw more birds in the lake.

There was a female Red-breasted Merganser swimming with six Horned Grebes! I had seen a couple of Horned Grebes in Lake Monocan in previous years, but never more than two at a time. The Horned Grebes had plumages ranging from partial to full breeding colors.
