Reports of Cackling Geese in the pond behind Kohl's in Waynesboro prompted a short side trip this morning on the way to do some grocery shopping. Although I may have seen Cackling Geese before, I was never quite sure as they are so similar to small Canada Geese. As soon as we arrived at the pond, I thought that I saw a lone Cackling Goose, based on its size, swimming along with some Mallards, but it must have been foreshortening, as the goose appears quite larger than the ducks in other views, and its bill and head shape look to me like a Canada Goose. Any other opinions are welcome. However, there was a new life bird for me in the pond - a male and a female American Wigeon.
