Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 1/3/11

The cold weather has moved back into the area just as the lakes and ponds were starting to melt. I was able to go on a photo hike mid-afternoon, not expecting to see very much this time of day. The southeast corner of Lake Monocan once again proved to be a good birding spot. From this spot I saw Cardinals, Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-throated Sparrows, Dark-eyed Juncos, American Goldfinches, Crows, Turkey Vultures, Bluebirds, a Red-shouldered Hawk, and a female Hairy Woodpecker. I saw four Downy Woodpeckers yesterday, but it has been a while since I last saw a Hairy Woodpecker.
