Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 11/28/10

Yesterday's cold front and strong winds moved through the area, and we awoke to temperatures in the low 20's, bright sunny skies, and no wind. I thought that the birds who were hunkered down yesterday would be out looking for food, and hoped that the wind might have blown some migrating waterfowl our way.

I started off at Sawmill Creek Pond #3, and saw a Great Blue Heron hiding at the water's edge at the other side of the pond.

As I got to Lake Monocan, I could see four Hooded Mergansers in the lake, but they flew away soon after they saw me. There was a second Great Blue Heron fishing from the dock - I have seen Great Blue Herons fishing in Lake Monocan many times, but never from the dock. After a while, the heron flew to the water's edge across the lake, and a male Kingfisher flew from the heron's spot back to the dock and landed on the roof of the rental building.

I have heard of geting all your ducks in a line, but geese??

I tried a few more favorite spots in Stoney Creek - saw lots of small birds: Bluebirds, Titmice, Chickadees, Crows, Cardinals, Song and White-throated Sparrows, Juncos, Mourning Doves, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and I heard a Red-tailed Hawk in the distance. There were four woodpecker species in our back yard: Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied, and Pileated.
