Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch 11/14/10

Today is the last day for the 2010 Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch. Although there are actually a few more days to go, it does not appear that there will be any official counters up there this year after today. I got there at 11:00, and had missed a Merlin earlier in the morning. I saw about 10 Red-tailed Hawks, and a lone Sharp-shinned Hawk. The Red-tailed Hawks were being harrassed by the crows.

Some of the hawks were flying in pairs, and one of the pairs (an adult and a juvenile?), were fighting with each other, but other pairs seemed more cordial. I had to leave about 1:30 to do some shopping in Waynesboro.

I made a quick stop at the hawk watch on the way home around 3:00, and another two Red-tailed Hawks made close approaches as they headed south. As I packed it in to head home and end my 2010 hawk watch up on Afton Mountain, American Crows, Turkey Vultures, and Black Vultures seemed to come together overhead from all directions, and put on a show. Almost as if they were wishing me good-bye until next year.
