Stoney Creek (Wintergreen) 6/9/10

We have 2+ wooded acres in our lot, and the harsh winter did a lot of damage to the trees. A few weeks ago, we had the downed/broken trees and braches cut up and chipped, exposing lots of stumps and bugs on the wood chips. We also had the most of the ground vegetation cut down to almost ground level. This has proven to be a smorgasbord for birds. We have been seeing three Pileated Woodpeckers scavenging the stumps and tree chips - one male and I think two females - hard to see the heads of all three clearly at the same time - I saw one feeding another one this morning but did not get a photo of that - drats! Also saw a Great-crested Flycatcher in our yard - uncommon down here in the valley.
